Genesis: Day 1

The inspiration for the Genesis series came from a photo which eventually didn’t find it’s way into the series.

It was a photo of an ad on a wall painted half white and half black. I looked at that photo so many times waiting for it “to fall in place”, when suddenly it triggered an association: the first day of the world creation.

The idea of associating the story about the creation of the world with the decayed Urban scenery appealed to me. At first, the contrast between the atmosphere of perfection, and the scenery of the less glamorous side of the city seemed strange. But the more I thought of it, I discovered the thread connecting the miracle of creation with textures, colors, and places that seem more like “the end” than “the beginning”.

Almost all the photos in the series were already in place, when I took this one (which eventually replaced the original Day 1). The sense of chaos and bursting energy seemed to be perfectly balanced with a perfect black square in the middle. It was as if order is starting to form — as if darkness is being constrained in order to make room for light.

It seemed just how I imagined Day 1.

Genesis

In the beginning there was nothing. Nothing but decay.

Then came someone with a can of paint. Then decay again. Then someone wrote something on a wall and someone else erased it. Then came someone with a camera.

At the end there was nothing. Nothing but decay.

Somewhere in between a world was created.
