Fons Vitae: Portrait of a Street | #1

I am walking up and down a street
a camera in my hand
I stop in front of a building

I hold still.

A young black girl approaches
“What are you doing” she asks
“I’m photographing the street” I say

“What’s so special about this street” she wonders
I pause for a moment and say
“Its name…”

Fons Vitae is Latin for Fountain of Life. It’s the name of a philosophical book written by Solomon Ibn Gabirol. The Hebrew translation (Meqor Hayyim - מקור חיים) is also the name of one quiet street in Tel-Aviv hiding behind the grand central bus station.

At first look, there’s nothing too interesting in that street. I could have easily missed this street, or pass through it without giving it a second thought. But its name caught my eyes. The moment I’ve noticed its name, the street began to change in my mind.

I rarely limit myself when going on a photo-walk, but I decided to walk this particular street over and over again, trying to capture its subtext — the things hiding behind the buildings, inside the walls, and along the street. I decided to dive into The Fountain of Life.

The Fons Vitae project will be posted one photo at a time over the next few weeks. You can see it entirely at Warehouse Zero.
